Work Permits

In California, students under 18 must obtain a work permit to be employed.

Approval Process

  1. Secure a job offer.
  2. Complete the work permit application below.
  3. Submit the application to your counselor.
  4. Obtain approval.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be under 18 years old and enrolled in school.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA (often 2.0 or higher).
  • Have good school attendance and behavior.
  • Be employed in a legal job (certain jobs, like newspaper delivery or working for parents, may have different rules).

Important Notes

  • Work permits are typically valid for the current school semester and must be renewed each term.
  • Students cannot work during school hours unless enrolled in a work experience education program.

For more detailed information and to access the necessary forms, visit the California Department of Education's Work Permits for Students webpage.

Remember, obtaining a work permit is a privilege that comes with responsibilities. Ensure that your academic performance and attendance meet your school's requirements to maintain eligibility.
